Digital nomads will be able to work at the most attractive locations in Krka NP and use all programs and contents in the Park under the same conditions as the local population
The Public Institute of Krka National Park and the Trokut new technology incubator in Šibenik have signed a cooperation agreement to develop a programme to receive this special target group – digital nomads, who are increasingly visiting Šibenik-Knin County. Digital nomad is the term for a person working remotely from their computer, usually in coworking spaces as they often travel around the world, working remotely from the destination of their choice attracted by natural and cultural diversity, quality of life, and good transport connections. This pandemic year has resulted in an increased number of people working remotely, and by the regulated legislation, Croatia is more popular than ever in the concept of a digital nomad.
The Public Institute of Krka National Park secures digital nomads with all the technical infrastructure they need in the park, especially fast and secure wi-fi access in the Visitor Centre at Laškovica, at the Krka Eco Campus in Puljane, at Stinice, opposite Visovac, and at Roški slap. Digital nomads will further be able to take part in unlimited educational programmes offered by the Institute, and join the Friends of the Krka Club under the same conditions as local residents, as they will also become local residents during their stay.
At the Trokut incubator, digital nomads will have access to their own work table and chair, the opportunity to use three kitchens, showers and washrooms, basketball court, free bicycle and car parking, technical support, fair use printer/scanner and many other interesting services that make Trokut an attractive base for digital nomads. Working at Trokut is perfect as it enables the nomad to combine work and travel, executing necessary tasks and maximising the use of free time.
“The selection of a destination for digital nomads is very specific. In choosing Croatia as their business destination, they are contributing to its visibility and popularity in the media. At Krka National Park, they will be able to find the best combination of natural values and cultural and historical heritage,” stressed the director of the Public Institute of Krka National Park Nella Slavica. She added, “The aim of our collaboration with Trokut is to organise the reception of digital nomads, as a contribution to the application and development of new technologies and enterprise, not only in the park area, but also in the city of Šibenik and throughout the county. In opening new locations on the Krka River, digital nomads will be able to spend more time in the broader park area, enjoying the hospitality of the local population, and becoming acquainted with the wealth of culinary traditions and customs.”
“Digital nomads represent a new work concept and a new lifestyle for individuals that have the opportunity to work outside their home country and travel the world, and the city of Šibenik and Krka National Park are highlights on their travel map. They travel to discover natural values, get to know national parks and the local culture, feel the pulse of the city, try the traditional, local cuisine, and create lifelong memories,” said Diana Mudrinić, director of the Trokut Incubator. She added, “This partnership with Krka National Park includes the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of this national park, and to combine business and pleasure. The concept of Holiwork will truly come to life among the streets of this city and the surrounding sights, above all Krka National Park. I am pleased that we can combine our knowledge and services to offer something new, until now unseen in this way – combining nature and technology.”
Receiving digital nomads and the new work concept of holiwork enjoys the full support of the City of Šibenik, which has recognized this specific niche of individuals, these world travellers. Digital nomads are usually developers, graphic designers, games, social media experts, cryptocurrency developers, IoT experts and cover many other areas in the field of ICT. They have a need to connect with nature and have an exceptionally heightened awareness of climate change, and therefore this cooperation with Krka National Park represents a natural step in the direction of building Šibenik-Knin County as the ideal destination for digital nomads year round.
Croatia is among the first countries in the world to fully regulate the status of digital nomads for third country citizens (i.e., not EU nationals). As of 1 January 2021, the Republic of Croatia has officially begun to offer temporary residency for digital nomads. The visa for digital nomads enables a temporary stay in Croatia for up to one year. Digital nomads are also able to apply for a second digital nomad visa, but only 6 months after the expiry of the first visa.
Applications are submitted online or in person to any Croatian embassy or consulate. The applicant must also enclose proof of a valid passport, proof of health insurance that includes the territory of the Republic of Croatia, proof of purpose – which may be a contract with their employer or a copy of own company registration, proof of regular earnings – which may be a bank statement, proof that they have not been convicted for a crime in their home country, and the address in the Republic of Croatia where the applicant plans to stay.
